The Day I Won the Lottery

I won the lottery.

No really, I did…

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t the EuroMillions or anything like that, but it was a good chunk of change.

When something like that happens, the first thing you think is; can this be real? Can I actually be that lucky?

Well I certainly was that day, and it felt amazing!

Sorry to tell you that we didn’t go out and buy a Lamborghini and a yacht.

Granted there were a few pairs of new shoes in the mix and the odd bottle of expensive champagne, but the rest went to paying off our mortgage.

Sound boring?

Maybe, but on reflection, now that I’m building my own business, what I’ve realised is it’s all about playing the long game.

And now that we’re living in Spain, ‘long game’ has a WHOLE new meaning!

Sure I could have gone and blown the lot on the day I cashed in the ticket, but what I did then is now affording me what I do now.

Starting your own business is not a quick fix. It takes time, patience and tenacity. It’s also about building relationships.

Even though we run online businesses, what I’m coming to realise is that it’s still about making real connections with your audience.

More so than ever in this new era of lockdowns and restrictions, people need to feel connected to others.

And just like before, building long term relationships is still a case of Meet, Like, Know, Trust.

Meet: You need to find your audience.

Like: You have to connect on a similar level - this is why building your Avatar is so important.

Know: You need to get to know me, who I am, what my values are and what I stand for.

Trust: I need to deliver real value to you in order to prove who I am and what I’m expert at.

Only then might we progress to doing business together.

It’s a long game.

In the few weeks I’ve been here in Spain, I’ve been lucky to be introduced to many wonderful people in the ‘offline’ world - as in face-to-face (or is it mask-to-mask now?), and those same principles stand; Meet, Like, Know, Trust

So if you’re thinking about starting an online business (and I sincerely recommend it), keep in mind that it’s a long game and you have to be ready for that.

Quick wins very rarely come along, if ever at all.

I was lucky enough to win the lottery, but you know what? It’s nothing compared to the freedom I now have in my new life as an online business owner.

And if you want to hear of the flip side, ask Andy about the time he sold his winning lottery ticket for a pound - I kid you not 🙈
